  • Feature: Connect an asset to a telematics device.

  • Use: See where your asset is and where it has been. Get up-to-the-minute diagnostic data.

Prerequisites

Contact your sales or support representative to enable telematics for your account and order devices. We offer devices and harnesses powered by Geotab for nearly every type of vehicle or mobile asset. Be sure to enable the telematics widget on the asset type before linking the device to an asset.

Linking devices

After your support representative enables telematics for your account and you receive your telematics devices from us, start linking devices to assets.

Unbox the telematics device and plug it into the OBD2 port. If a harness was supplied, plug in or wire the harness to the appropriate connection. The device goes through a power-up cycle. Once all three lights (blue, yellow, red) are lit, the device starts transmitting data.

Activating platform access

Next, hook the telematics device to an asset on the Nektar platform.

  1. Open the asset summary page for the asset.

  2. Scroll down to the Telematics Widget.

  3. Click the Link Now button.

  4. Select Nektar Telematics (Powered by Geotab) as the provider.

Enter the device serial number, which starts with a G. Look for the sticker on the bottom of the unit. Click Link.

Connection changes

After you link a telematics device to an asset, a few changes take place.

  • Nektar creates a platform asset for the telematics device. That device is linked through genealogy to the vehicle asset. This link is for internal reference purposes. It can also be used to track down a vehicle or device with the Geotab serial number.

  • The telematics widget shows real-time data.

Some diagnostics may show N/A or may be missing (even if they appear on other assets). This could be due to a lack of support for that diagnostic on the asset (e.g. some vehicles may support feeding tire pressure data through telematics, but others don't).

  • The telematics device updates the asset's location. This data appears in the Asset Summary, maps, and anywhere else the asset's location is used. The telematics heart icon beside the latitude/longitude in the Asset Summary shows the telematics device is updating the location. Hover over the coordinates to see the time of the last update.
