A georeferenced image is any image which has corresponding data describing how it should be placed on a map. The map will accept images of the following types to create a georeferenced image layer:

  • .png

  • .jpeg/.jpg

  • .pdf

Creating a Raster Layer by Georeferencing an Image

Notes:

  • It is helpful to have the map viewing the area you would like to place your georeferenced image before you begin creating it.

  • You will able to rotate the image and expand/shrink it. You cannot alter the aspect ratio of the image, crop it, or alter the shape. Make sure the image you are using is in the aspect ratio and shape you need.

You can create a georeferenced image in the map by clicking the plus symbol in the Raster Layers section, and then clicking New Layer

A popup will be shown - Clicking Georeferenced Image will show this screen

Fill out the fields by supplying a name for the georeferenced image in the Layer Title field, and uploading your image by clicking the file icon ("Drop file here to upload") and selecting the desired image for upload, OR drag the desired photo into the square. Once the fields are filled out and the file is uploaded, clicking Next will prompt you to click on the map somewhere to begin placing the image.

As noted earlier, you should already have the map viewing the area you would like to place the image, as by this point, clicking anywhere on the map with the intent to drag it to where you would like to place the image could result in planting the image in an undesirable location.

Once you have clicked to place the image, you can optionally shrink or expand (circled in red), rotate (circled in purple), and adjust opacity to help you place the image.

When the image is satisfactorily placed, click Save.

The image will upload and the coordinate data will be saved. The new raster layer will then appear in the Layers tab.
