What is an asset definition?

An asset definition is the structure, defined by a user, that determines the content, visibility and functionality of an asset. In essence, an asset definition is a template for creating tasks. Asset definitions are organized by a category and class, which are mandatory. These act as a means of grouping and filtering asset definitions. Notable aspects of asset definitions include:

  • A custom icon and color to represent the asset definition

  • A description

  • Elements, organized into sections (individual data elements like checkboxes, text inputs, lists, numeric inputs, etc.)

  • Valid task definitions (restrict only certain type of tasks from being allowed to be recorded against assets of a certain type)

  • Settings for toggling whether assets of this type should be allowed to be attached to a project, specific columns that should be used to create an asset identifier, and whether the asset definition is active or not (used to disable the use of a definition without deleting it)

Note that many of these options are defaulted on creation. Make sure to take the time to set these to match your needs.
